What does the 250cc segment hold; will Suzuki step up to the plate?

Very few motorcycle companies capture the hearts of people worldwide as much as Suzuki has. The brand is synonymous with quality and fast motorcycles, but in a country like India, it is tough to do so. Here the bread and butter of many bike manufacturers are commuter bikes, lower cylinder cycles which give very high mileage and last for years. Suzuki, on the other hand, is known for making fast and beautiful, high capacity bikes.

Here they needed to revamp the formula and introduce entirely new bikes namely, the Gixxer and the Gixxer SF. These two bikes featured the same 149 cc engine and were zippy and quick on Indian roads. The styling was the only area where they differed, with the SF featuring full faired body and the original Gixxer came as a street bike. Now the company has its sights set on the 250 cc segment, a market which remains quite untapped as the pricing and capacity of the bikes is rather confusing.

Below it is the 200cc which are filled with bikes from both Indian and foreign manufacturers, and above it is the 300-400cc category, which also has similar statistics. The 250cc department lacks cycles which provide the power but is also affordable. Suzuki sees this as the perfect opportunity to launch the Gixxer 250, which is based on the Inazuma design. The bike will compete with the KTM Duke 250 which is the current market leader. The only issue which keeps the new Gixxer from taking over will be the price. The Suzuki Gixxer 250 price is set to be very competitive as it will be made in India.

The bike will launch as naked motorcycle, with a fully faired SF version in the pipelines as well. Its design is borrowed from its elder siblings, the 750cc and the 1000cc versions. These variants are also available in India but are fairly expensive due to import taxes and hence remain a niche for motorcycle enthusiasts.  

The bike will also feature LED head and tail lamps along with a fully digital instrument cluster. As far as the engine is concerned, if we are to believe in rumours it will be a 250cc single cylinder, four valve engine. The cooling is believed to be oil and air based, instead of liquid cooling, which is a decision taken by the manufacturer to keep down costs. The output is expected to be around 25-30 brake horsepower, which is sufficient in this price point. The bike will also come with a six-speed transmission for smoother rides on highways.

This bike will surely see sales shoot through the roof if it is priced properly. The aggressive styling and the powerful engine make the Suzuki 250 an enticing buy, and if it can beat out competitors in pricing, then it will surely be the model to beat. If you are in the market for a bike that will look very different from its competitors, this bike is it.
